Colum's Garden Journal

July 08, 2007

Well, only trace amounts of rain on Friday, and none on Saturday allowed me to get lawn mowed and edged Saturday.  Grass was thick, heavy and wet.  Sunday, today, we got an additional 1.25" of rain.  Having a tough time getting anything done but mowing in between rain showers.  Garden plants are doing OK, but need to dry out a little.  I have lost track of how many inches of rain we have had here.

I still need to get finished repairing my fence.

We were .4" short of tying the record for the wettest June since 1928.  On the 1st and 2nd day of July I received 1/2" per day.  It is too wet to work in the yard or garden.

This is the third year for the crocosmias and they are having their best year yet.  However, I plan to move them this fall.  I don't know where yet.  In their place I plan to put in a Rose of Sharon.  I have wanted something to go into that corner of the bed that has some color and considerable vertical height.  The crocosmias just never reached the height and abundance needed to be a real focal point.

Also, this fall, I intend to plant at least six fruit trees in our front yard.  I have nothing but lawn and it is time to put the front yard to work.  I want two plum on the north side; two peach in front; I haven't decided what else on the south side.  Perhaps an apple tree if I can find one that will do well in our area.  Perhaps I will go with more peaches and stretch the season from early ripening to late season ripening.

Projects for the rest of Summer and into the Fall:

1. Continue to trim/prune back trees in back yard to give more light for vegetable garden.

2. Prepare asparagus bed along north fence.

3. Continue to repair backyard fence.

4.
