Title: Air Buns
Submitted by: sness - June 21, 2006
½ cup lukewarm water
1 tsp sugar
1 envelope yeast.
Dissolve sugar in water. Sprinkle yeast over top and let sit in warm place for ten minutes.
Place in large bowl:
½ cup sugar
½ cup lard, shortening, or margarine
1 tsp salt
2 T vinegar
3 ½ cups lukewarm water
Add softened yeast, then add between 8 to 10 cups flour. Add just enough so dough will not stick to hands but it should still be quite soft. Knead. Grease top of dough, then cover with lid or cloth. Let rise in warm place for 2 hours. Knead down. Let rise 1 hour then knead down again. Form into buns the size of golf balls. Place on greased cookie sheets or cake pans. Cover and let rise in warm place for 3 hours. Do not put too close together in pans as they rise to a large size. Bake in 400° oven till golden brown. Brush tops with butter, then remove to racks to cool. Makes 4 dozen buns.
